Marillion se formó en 1978, enInglaterra. Su nombre original fué
Silmarillion y sonaba con un estilo New Wave Progresivo. En
ese momento las se perfilaba como una segunda ola
progresiva ya que las superbandas de los 70 ya habían tocado
el techo de su capacidad creativa.
Si bien hubo cambios en la formación inicial con Derek Dick
(FISH) como vocalista, lanzan en 1983 su primer álbum "Script
for a Jester's Tear" (EMI). Completan la banda, Steve Rothery en
guitarras, Peter Trewavas en Bajo, Mark Kelly en teclados y Ian
Moseley en batería.

Luego seguiría "Fugazi" (1984) y el exitoso "Misplaced Childhood" (1985) que contenía uno de los mejores temas esta banda
"Kayleigh" que le dio el renombre mundial que merecían, junto con temas como ” Market square heroes" y "He knows you know".
Lamentablemente los problemas de salud de FISH, hicieron que la banda estuviera inactiva por falta de su vocalista, siendo
"Clutching at Straws" (1987) el último álbum que lanzaran con el.
Sin vocalista lanzaron el album en vivo "The Thieving Magpie" mientras buscaban un nuevo vocalista que lograra mantener el
estilo de la banda, y es así que poco tiempo después convocan a Steve Hogarth con quien lanzan "Seasons End" (1990),
emprendiendo además una gira mundial.
Más tarde lanzan "Holidays in Eden" (1991) que si bien era un poco más comercial no tuvo el éxito de los anteriores. Luego
graban "Brave" (1994), un exitoso álbum mas experimental, que fue coronado con una memorable gira internacional. Sigue un
álbum de estudio llamado "Afraid of Sunlight" (1995), "This Strange Engine" (1997). Más tarde crean su propio sello con el que
lanzan “Radiation”. También en 1999, hacen su propio site “Marillion.com” y lanzan un set de temas simples llamado ””Marillion
Singles Box 82-88”.

Luego en el 2001 graban “Anoraknophobia”, un
poco mas pop y en el 2002 "Anorak inthe U.K.
Live".
Marillion ha aprovechado las oportunidades
que internet brinda, haciendo un contacto de ida
y vuelta con sus fans que se ve reflejado en el
album ‘Marillion.com’ en 1999 donde los fans
seleccionaron los temas y precompraron el
álbum financiando incluso su grabación. Algo
similar ocurrió con luego con ‘Marbles’
manteniendo un fuerte lazo de fidelidad con sus
fans.
